Africa-based queer scholar Keguro Macharia recently critiqued much of the scholarship in Queer African Studies, suggesting that “the work now circulating as Queer African Studies in the United States is indifferent to many of the conceptual frames in African studies.”  This course takes Macharia’s critiques seriously and asks participants to analyze Queer Studies and African Studies simultaneously, undermining fetishization and objectification in global contexts and refusing to focus on African queers as “subjects.”  Instead, using varied media from a range of disciplines, as well as activist sources and films, our work as a class will center desire and queer politics through the attention to the complex interventions and insights of thinkers based in African contexts.
