What is Sex?: Intersex Interventions

GWSS 390, M/W 1:30-3:20

Mondays-Synchronous online meetings via zoom, Wednesdays-in person class

Despite scientific agreement that more than one percent of us don’t fit medical definitions of “male” and “female,” intersex perspectives have remained at the edge of conversations about sex and gender.  This class pushes back against the pathologization and objectification of those deemed intersex, focusing on the emerging field of critical intersex studies with a global perspective.  Centering colonialism and racism as inseparable from gender binaries, the course explores topics ranging from sport to social media with a strong focus on documentary film and autobiography.
