Regina Yung Lee is co-principle investigator on a National Science Foundation Grant, “Changing the Conversation with Humanitarian Engineering Context” (RFE Award #1763204). Alongside Jessica Kaminsky (UW Civil Engineering), Jennifer Turns and Cindy Altman (UW Engineering Education), Cristina Poleacovschi (Iowa State Civil Engineering), with postdoc Giovanna Scalone, our study examines the effects of engineering pedagogy on engineering identity. The study’s main research questions focus on the effects of including humanitarian context surrounding civic structure design and implementation into engineering education, as indexed to race, class, gender, and sexuality. The project engages concepts from engineering education, case-study centered pedagogies, and implicit bias to redesign and test for the effectiveness of case studies in widening the conceptual bias behind the term “engineer.”
