Sounds of Social Justice: Diasporic Routes of Music and Dance

  • Program Dates: August 13 to September 4, 2024
  • Application Deadline: February 15
  • Credits: 5 credits, 3 weeks in Spain (GWSS 390/Honors 384, Interdisciplinary, VLPA & I&S, “W”, “DIV”)
  • Open to: All undergraduate and graduate students of any major
  • Language: Taught entirely in English; Spanish language skills optional

Embark on an immersive exploration of resistance, resilience, and contemporary social justice movements in Spain and the Spanish language diaspora. Through participatory dance and music, discover how sound practices create spaces of belonging.

Faculty:

Led by Professors Michelle Habell-Pallan (UW GWSS and Honors) and Martha Gonzalez (Scripps College, Gender and Chicano Studies), in collaboration with the UW Leon Center

Experience & Learn:

  • Connect with a feminist immigrant justice organization in the Basque Country.
  • Engage in music and dance workshops.
  • Culminate the program with a vibrant community music Fandango celebration in Madrid.
  • Field trips to Bilbao and Madrid, including Flamenco dance performances and museum visits.
  • Collaborative projects, independent scholarly reflection, and group podcast assignments.

Location: León, Spain

  • Population: 128,000
  • A walkable city on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
  • Well-connected by bus, air, rail, and public transport.
  • Lodging included in the program price, with host families providing three meals a day.

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

  • Financial Aid Awards applicable for study-abroad. 
  • Automatic consideration for need-based scholarships (up to $4,000) for all applicants.
