Shelley Pryde Publishes in Africa Is a Country

Submitted by Whitney Miller on

Shelley Pryde, a South African doctoral student in Feminist Studies, recently published a piece titled “Helen Zille’s transphobia” on Africa Is a Country, a widely respected platform known for its critical perspectives on social, political, and cultural issues affecting the African continent.

Pryde’s article, published July 21, examines the transphobic rhetoric of South African political figure Helen Zille, situating this discourse within the broader context of gender critical feminism and transmisogyny. The piece challenges reductive narratives about gender and power, offering a thoughtful feminist analysis rooted in the politics of South Africa.

Pryde initially developed the article as part of her coursework for GWSS 502: Feminist Queer and Trans Inquiries, a new graduate seminar that explores how cisgenderism and transmisogyny shape understandings of womanhood.
