Amanda Lock Swarr Explores Histories and Activism by Intersex South Africans in Latest Book

Submitted by Whitney Miller on

Amanda Lock Swarr's latest book Envisioning African Intersex is now available from Duke University Press. Following in the footsteps of her previous book, Sex in Transition: Remaking Gender and Race in South Africa, the book delves into the intricate relationship between gender, race, and resistance in South Africa, with a particular focus on the intersex community.

Through rigorous research and insightful analysis, Swarr illuminates the ways in which colonial ideology, scientific racism, and normative gender standards have led to the pathologization of intersex individuals throughout the country's history. She also highlights the ways in which intersex South Africans have challenged and defied such harmful essentializing. Hailed as a "brilliant eye-opener" and an "imperative intervention," Swarr's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the fields of intersex studies and African queer studies.

Thanks to the support of generous donors, Swarr successfully secured free availability of this book for all through Open Access. You can now enjoy the entire book online by clicking here or choose to purchase a copy through this link. All author royalties from Envisioning African Intersex will be donated to Intersex South Africa.
