Professor Amanda Lock Swarr has been awarded the Bonnie & Vern L. Bullough Book Award by The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. This honor recognizes an outstanding book that advances sexual science, celebrating Dr. Swarr’s Envisioning African Intersex: Challenging Colonial and Racist Legacies in South African Medicine.
The book, which examines the lasting impacts of colonialism and racism on intersex representation in South Africa, also highlights the activism of African intersex individuals. In addition to this award, it has received the DSREI Professional Book Award and is a finalist for the African Studies Association Best Book Prize. Proceeds from print sales are donated to Intersex South Africa, and the e-book is freely available via Open Access through Duke University Press.
