Entry Requirements
Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies is an open major. Students in good academic standing may declare the major at any time.
Completion Requirements
- Credit Requirement: Minimum of 55 credits required
- GPA Requirement: Minimum cumulative UW GPA of 2.0 in courses applied to the major
- Residence Requirement: At least 25 of the credits applied towards the major must be completed in residence at UW
Core Courses (15 credits)
- GWSS 200: Intro to Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (5 credits)
- Prerequisite for some upper-division GWSS courses
- Transfer equivalent courses may also be accepted on a case-by-case basis
- GWSS 302: Feminist Theories and Methods (5 credits)
- Prerequisite: GWSS 200
- Must be completed before enrolling in GWSS 494
- GWSS 494: Capstone (5 credits)
- Prerequisites: GWSS 200 and GWSS 302
Additional Course Requirements (20 credits)
- One Upper-Division Course Focusing on Transnational Perspective (5 credits)

- Focus Points (15 credits)
- Complete at least one course in three of the four overlapping areas:
- Global Identity Formations
- Decolonizing Empire
- Feminist Knowledge Production and Radical Critique
- Building Social, Cultural, and Political Movements for Change
- Refer to the Undergraduate Resources page for approved courses
- Complete at least one course in three of the four overlapping areas:
Upper-Division Electives (20 credits)
- May include any course at the 300 or 400 level
- A maximum of 10 credits may be taken as credit/no credit
- A maximum of 5 combined credits from GWSS 497 and GWSS 499 may be applied toward this requirement
