Entry Requirements

Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies is an open major. Students in good academic standing may declare the major at any time.

Completion Requirements

  • Credit Requirement: Minimum of 55 credits required
  • GPA Requirement: Minimum cumulative UW GPA of 2.0 in courses applied to the major
  • Residence Requirement: At least 25 of the credits applied towards the major must be completed in residence at UW

Core Courses (15 credits)

  • GWSS 200: Intro to Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (5 credits)
    • Prerequisite for some upper-division GWSS courses
    • Transfer equivalent courses may also be accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • GWSS 302: Feminist Theories and Methods (5 credits)
    • Prerequisite: GWSS 200 
    • Must be completed before enrolling in GWSS 494
  • GWSS 494: Capstone (5 credits)
    • Prerequisites: GWSS 200 and GWSS 302

Additional Course Requirements (20 credits)

  • One Upper-Division Course Focusing on Transnational Perspective (5 credits)
  • Focus Points (15 credits)
    • Complete at least one course in three of the four overlapping areas:
      • Global Identity Formations
      • Decolonizing Empire
      • Feminist Knowledge Production and Radical Critique
      • Building Social, Cultural, and Political Movements for Change
    • Refer to the Undergraduate Resources page for approved courses 

Upper-Division Electives (20 credits)

  • May include any course at the 300 or 400 level
  • A maximum of 10 credits may be taken as credit/no credit
  •  A maximum of 5 combined credits from GWSS 497 and GWSS 499 may be applied toward this requirement
